The World Is A Living Being

“The world is a living being – one nature, one soul. Keep that in mind,” said Marcus Aurelius Antonius (Roman Emperor and a Stoic philosopher) several centuries back. Several years later in the 1960s, Herbert Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian philosopher, whose work is among the cornerstones of the study of media theory, coined the term “global village” for the entire world. This intriguing term encompasses the interconnectedness of the world through the media, Internet, and electronic communications. It has been agreed by many that today’s world has become a village in which there are no boundaries to trade or communicate between cultures or people living in different parts of the globe. While there may be some demerits of this situation as well, globalization, in general, has had a very positive impact on society at large. One disadvantage of social media networks is that they can create an image of something/someone that does not exist or is not good as presented. For example, if you go to a website that sells various commodities and finds an article that has 50 positive reviews while another commodity has only 10 reviews, you are very likely to go for the one that has more posted reviews! Such is the working of a human mind and psychology! The same illusion is created for the personal lives of the rich and famous as most are wanting to “show off” on social media sites. Some people who are very active participants in social media like to “play this game” well to get lots of “clicks” and “likes”! The primary goal of such individuals is to create an “Illusion” of a very positive self-image and “associated happiness”! Posting party pictures or other so-called “happy events” does not mean one is actually happy!
